Public holiday in Cangas de Onís
We celebrate San Antonio de Padua (St Anthony of Padua) practically throughout the entire month of June, as we usually have two or three weekends filled with festivities. The weekend before June 13—the big day of the festivities—we celebrate El Pregón (opening act) to kick off the festivities.
On the day of the Pregón, the Queen and Ladies of San Antonio are presented and we celebrate the Pregón to announce the festivities.
What's more, if you have the chance to attend, you can enjoy traditional local dances. During this weekend, there are also nighttime street parties to enjoy the evening.
La Joguera (The Bonfire)
La Joguera is the magical night before the big day, when a bonfire several meters high is lit at midnight and only the most daring jump over it.
At night, we continue the celebration with more street parties, and the next day, men and women dress in the traditional costume of Asturias.
Women receiving the Saint
Once in El Robledal (The Oak Grove), the Ramos and the Saint are taken to the Chapel of San Antonio, where women receive them to the rhythm of the tambourine.
